Tartans Celebrate WE Day California

More than 50 St. Margaret’s Upper School and Middle School students attended WE Day California, a celebration of youth activism attended by celebrities, business executives and inspiring personalities in Los Angeles.

WE Day is a celebration of the WE movement, which offers resources and encourages young people to create positive social change in local communities and around the world. St. Margaret’s is a designated WE school, and sponsors a WE Club in the Middle School and incorporates WE educational resources in multiple Upper School courses. Members of the WE Club as well as several service-oriented Upper School students who expressed interest in WE were invited to attend.

“This is our third year sending students to WE Day and it has definitely had an inspiring and contagious impact on our community,” said Lora Allison, Upper School director of community life. “Students realize the power of their individual voice and are encouraged to use it to make their communities less about themselves and more about ‘WE.’”

Among the Tartans in attendance was junior Gunnar Gehl, who went on stage and introduced two local students who have made positive contributions to the world. Gunnar’s family is involved in WE Day California, and Gunnar is a youth member on the North American board.

“Through WE, I have learned so much about how much giving back means,” Gunnar said. “The youth are the most powerful people on Earth, and it just takes a little bit of doing good to make this world a better place.”

Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston, Dierks Bentley and John Stamos presented at WE Day California.
