SMES Band Director Shares Expertise With Incoming Berklee Students at Grammy Museum

Chris Carbajal, a graduate of Berklee, shared his tips and advice for studying at the prestigious music school, improving as a musician, transitioning from college to the professional world, and life as a professional musician.
St. Margaret’s band director Chris Carbajal recently took part in a panel discussion for students who have been accepted into the Berklee College of Music. The event took place at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

Mr. Carbajal, a graduate of Berklee, shared his tips and advice for studying at the prestigious music school, improving as a musician, transitioning from college to the professional world, and life as a professional musician. He encouraged students to develop a practice routine, work on ear training and music theory, make connections with fellow students and teachers, and to grind every day in search of professional music work.

“Remember, your next door neighbor in the dorm, your ensemble-mate or someone you pass every day in the hall may hire you for a gig in the future,” Mr. Carbajal told the students.

In addition to being St. Margaret’s band director, Mr. Carbajal is a professional musician. He’s worked with acts such as Barry Manilow, legendary Iranian singer Ebi and the ska band Save Ferris.
