ICE Lab Teacher Angela Mackenzie Shares Expertise at ATLIS Conference in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Mackenzie discussed how educators can use computer coding to inspire innovation across the K-12 curriculum and beyond.
St. Margaret’s Lower School ICE Lab teacher Angela Mackenzie was part of a panel of presenters at the annual conference of the Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools, taking place this week in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Mackenzie spoke during a session titled, “Input: Student Coding; Output: Innovation” discussing how educators can use computer coding to inspire innovation across the K-12 curriculum and beyond.

Mrs. Mackenzie provided insight on how St. Margaret’s is integrating coding throughout its existing curricula to grow interest in computer science among students.

The focus of my presentation was to share how we structure our computer science curriculum at St. Margaret's and how we integrate it in the Lower School. For example, we use the STEAM theme for every grade level and integrate it with a coding and robotics challenge,” Mrs. Mackenzie said. “I then shared what our Middle School and Upper School elective and AP course options are and how we are constantly evaluating our program to ensure we are offering the best courses possible for our students.”

ATLIS is a national professional association for technology leaders in independent schools, offering professional development, mentorship, resources and networking opportunities. St. Margaret’s is one of 120 member schools across the United States.
“The attendees were engaged and interested in what we do at St. Margaret’s, and it sparked a lot of great conversation.”
