St. Margaret’s Celebrates 60th Swallows Day Parade With San Juan Capistrano

More than 100 St. Margaret’s students, faculty and staff participated in the cherished San Juan Capistrano tradition.
At the 60th annual Swallows Day Parade last Saturday, St. Margaret’s showed its love and commitment to the San Juan Capistrano community as the overall sponsor with a wonderful parade entry featuring more than 100 St. Margaret’s students, faculty and staff.

A St. Margaret’s beloved tradition of its own, Tartans have participated in the parade for more than 30 years displaying the school’s deep affinity to the this treasured community event and mission to educate the hearts and minds of young people for lives of learning, leadership and service. Leading the St. Margaret’s parade procession was the school’s partner, award-winning LA Scots Bagpipers, who bring the school’s Scottish heritage to the parade each year. The Tartans cheerleaders followed alongside the 2018 Academy League Champion girls soccer team.

Students and faculty from across the school participated, including Lower School Core Council, PAWsitive Character members, grade 3 San Juan History Day students and Middle and Upper School ASB members who walked alongside Head of School Will Moseley, his wife Jenny Moseley and Assistant Head of School for Strategic Initiatives Ryan Dahlem. Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano also marched with 50 students leading with festive chants, and Special Camp for Special Kids campers and counselors participated in their own horse-drawn carriage with 25 campers and counselors including many St. Margaret’s students and alums.

“The Swallows Day Parade is a joyous tradition in our community that is near and dear to our hearts at St. Margaret’s,” Mr. Moseley said. “Every year, we look forward to participating and seeing the wonderful, smiling faces of our community along the parade route. We are honored to support our town and participate in this cherished event that pays tribute to the Legend of the Swallows Return to our beloved San Juan Capistrano.”

St. Margaret’s has sponsored the parade for more than 25 years and left its mark on local parade goers. In addition to celebrating the Swallows return, the parade pays tribute to the city’s Spanish, American Western and Juaneño Indian heritage. The parade has grown from a small school carnival in the 1950s to now celebrating its 60th anniversary as one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country.

A special thank you to all the Tartans, students, faculty and parent chaperones who supported this effort and represented St. Margaret’s in the parade, including Mr. and Mrs. Moseley, Mr. Dahlem, Tupper Spring, Maile Bellosi, Penny Mateer, Lora Allison, Stefani Baker, Kylie Middlebrook, Johnny Marmelstein, Jennifer Perez, Victor Cota and the Breakthrough Team; Executive Director and Assistant Director of Special Camp for Special Kids Lindsay Eres and Stefani Baker and Special Camp students and counselors.
