More than 35 Upper School students performed the over-the-top, exciting production of The Drowsy Chaperone, about a man narrating a fictitious dramatic musical from the 1920s and satirizing the genre. In this musical, a bride (Janet) is conflicted about giving up her role as a Hollywood star to marry the love of her life, Robert.

The show was directed by Upper School Drama Program Director Mr. Caleb Goh, musically directed by Director of Choral Music Mrs. Stacey Miles, assistant directed by Mr. Mitchell Gustin and the orchestra was directed by Mrs. Adela Kwan. The production featured singing monkeys, four romances, and up to 17 costume changes, masterfully illustrating the fun and excitement of musical theater.

Behind the scenes, many students worked to bring this musical to life, including Katherine Sele, the choreographer of many complicated dance numbers, Madison Mafi and Brennan Mafi as the stage manager and assistant stage manager, and Zoe Mellard as the makeup and hair designer.

Cappies critic Devoree Shields of Mission Viejo High School praised the performance, writing “An ode to standard musicals in all their whimsical glory, The Drowsy Chaperone at St. Margaret's High School satirically captures the hilarious yet heartfelt realities of musical theater. Following the fanciful imagination of a man who's simply feeling blue, audiences are exposed to a musical story addressing stereotypes of 20th-century Golden Age theatre, producing a rhythmic riot of an evening.
