Tartans Knock Off No. 1 Mater Dei in Girls Lacrosse

The Tartans defeated the Monarchs 12-10 on the road Tuesday.
St. Margaret's avenged 2017's semifinal loss to Mater Dei on Tuesday night, 12-10, snapping the Monarchs’ three-year undefeated record against Orange County opponents.

It was all Mater Dei in the first half of the game, with the Monarchs dominating possession for the first 10 minutes, embarking on a four-goal streak before junior Niki Miles got the Tartans on the board. The Tartans continued to press the attack and brought the score almost even with Mater Dei leading 5-4 at the half.

The beginning of the second half belonged to the Tartans as St. Margaret's quickly rattled off three straight goals generated by Cailin Young's stifling draw control. After nonstop trading of goals, the Tartans led by one, 11-10, with three minutes left to play. Facing a cagey defense, the Tartans maintained possession and cycled their offense before Maddie Barkate found Niki Miles for the score to seal the 12-10 victory.

The Tartans were led by Maddie Barkate (3g, 2a), Niki Miles (3g, 2a), Cailin Young (2g, 1a), Campbell Case (2g) and Jordan Miles (2g). Goaltender Ellie Jones kept the Tartans in it, recording four saves on 14 shots.

With the victory, the Tartans move to the No. 1 spot in Orange County and will take on No. 15 Tesoro High School on Friday, March 23 at 4:30 p.m. on Tartan Field.
