Geography Bee Tests Middle School Students’ Knowledge of the World

The single-elimination trivia contest in front of the entire student body was ultimately won by grade 7 student Hayden Mann.
Middle School students competed on the Hurlbut Theater stage last week, testing their knowledge of Earth’s oceans, continents and countries during the Middle School Geography Bee, part of the nationwide National Geographic Bee organized by the National Geographic Society.

The students were selected to compete through a qualifying quiz that all Middle School students took in history class, which determined the 10 contestants from each grade level.

The Middle School history and social sciences department then ran the final competition, a single-elimination trivia contest in front of the entire student body, which was ultimately won by grade 7 student Hayden Mann. Grade 8 student Rylan Rodrigues-Zahn finished second, while grade 8 student Mateen Solehjou finished third. All three received gift cards as a prize, and Hayden will take a qualifying quiz for a chance to compete in the National Geographic California State Bee on April 6 in Fresno.

The National Geographic Bee, organized by the National Geographic Society, welcomes students from 10,000 schools across the country. The nationwide competition culminates with the National Championship at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington D.C., in May, with the overall winner receiving a $50,000 scholarship.
