Board of Trustees President Jason Weiss and Head of School Will Moseley presented the State of the School Address on Wednesday in the McGregor Family Theater, with other school leaders, comprehensively detailing the strength of St. Margaret’s academic, operational, financial and strategic initiatives, with a look toward the future.

“I can say confidently that our school is strong, thriving and well-positioned for continued growth and success,” Mr. Weiss told the attendees. “St. Margaret’s is instilling in our young people wisdom and character, hope and confidence, so they, with full hearts and minds, can meet the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Mr. Weiss opened the presentation explaining the Board’s responsibilities in safeguarding the mission of the school, and how that sparked progress in initiatives such as capital fundraising, endowment, the Annual Fund, strategic planning and school leadership.

He also detailed the months-long financial review and planning that led to the setting of 2018-2019 tuition levels.

“Nothing we do will ever be more important or meaningful than our investment in our children’s future,” Mr. Weiss said. “And the trust you place in this school drives us to meet and exceed your highest expectations.”

Mr. Moseley presented a comprehensive review of the school’s recent academic and institutional accomplishments and highlights, including major Strategic Plan initiatives and a look at what is coming next for St. Margaret’s. This included student accomplishments in academics, athletics and the arts over the past year, national education attention for St. Margaret’s ambitious Strategic Plan, campus facility improvements including the Johnson Wallis Visual Arts Center, and future initiatives in academics, cultural competency, advancement, facilities and more.

“No institution should stand still for excellence is always moving forward. This is an extraordinary period of change in education, and we are excited to be at the forefront, continually innovating our program and moving the school forward,” Mr. Moseley said.

Assistant Head of School for Strategic Initiatives Ryan Dahlem updated attendees on current strategic initiatives at St. Margaret’s, including an extensive look at the development of the new school schedule that will be implemented for the 2018-2019 school year. Informed by student health and wellness, strategic academic priorities and ongoing innovation, the new schedule features a later start time for all students and a consistent daily and weekly format for the Middle School and Upper School, which he presented.

Mr. Dahlem shared insight into the year-long schedule review and development process, including feedback from students, parents, faculty and staff, guidance from Independent School Management scheduling expert Bryan Smith, and guidance and statements from legislative bodies and professional associations on the short- and long-term effects of a student’s daily schedule.

Academic Dean Jeneen Graham detailed the school’s three-year accreditation process with the California Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Through the work of 18 steering committee members and 264 writers, St. Margaret’s compiled a 262-page self-study detailing every aspect of the school, which was submitted in December. The final step will be a February visit by the accreditation team, made up of peer educators from schools all over California, to observe and learn more about St. Margaret’s.

“To us, this place is home,” Dr. Graham said. “But to others who are not familiar with our consistently high level of excellence and innovation, I think they will be overwhelmed by how much we have accomplished since our last accreditation visit just six years ago.”
