PTF Coffee House Cabaret Showcases Talented Student Performances

This year’s program included 37 selected acts featuring Middle School and Upper School students.
The 2018 Coffee House Cabaret featured four performances in the McGregor Family Theater last week. This year’s program included 37 selected acts featuring Middle School and Upper School students.

“The Coffee House Cabaret provides students the opportunity to perform pieces that they have selected, written or choreographed on their own, giving them a chance to show their individuality,” Director of the Arts Darcy Rice said. “Their selections were evident in the variety of instrumental and vocal ballads, comedy, classical, jazz, operetta, country, pop, and rock music.”

The Coffee House Cabaret Band provided live accompaniment. The band members were senior Clayton Chalmers, sophomore Marek Magaña, freshman Julia Schulze, guest artist Tony Cinquini, and faculty accompanist Adela Kwan and band director Chris Carbajal. Freshman James Kim emceed each performance.

Many seniors took to the stage this year for their final Coffee House performances including Hana Adams, Evette Chung, Gabriella Cinquini, Jaden Cloobeck, Julia DaMour, Kinsale Hueston, Megan Huff, Jake Kuljis, Anneka Miller, Marissa Mitchell, Parker Ryan, Katherine Sele, Daisy Sellas, Blake Stevenson, Logan Tomaselli, and Bryce Victor.

The show featured student dancers who choreographed their own pieces: Hana Adams, Ava Olsen, and Katherine and Claire Sele, a sister duet who danced an upbeat routine to “Havana.” New to this category was Jaden Cloobeck, who choreographed his own tap while “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Spoken word highlights included Kinsale Hueston reciting her poem “Four Letter Words,” which was one of the works that qualified her to become a National Student Poet, as well as 3 comedic monologues by Jake Kuljis, Parker Ryan, and Emily Sun.

Our instrumentals were Kevin Zhu and Megan Huff on the piano both playing classical pieces from Frederic Chopin; Evette Chung performing Vivaldi’s “Winter” on her electric violin; Brayden Windes and Marek Magaña playing saxophone and bass guitar; and grade 8 student Will Weiss, who amazed the audience as he rocked his electric guitar performing Van Halen’s “Eruption.” There were many vocalists who also provided their own instrumentals this year: Marissa Mitchell, Jaden Rosenhain and Josh Buckanavage, Julia DaMour, Gabriella Cinquini, Logan and Shea Tomaselli, and Daisy Sellas who performed her original song, “Living in Color.”

Other vocalists who mesmerized the audience were Cathryn Giusto, Alexis Woods, Hannah Olsen, Shaudeh Farjami, Blake Stevenson, Tommy Colglazier, Nicholas Jacome, Zoe Shor, Jack Aitken, Tatiana Cloobeck, Rylan Rodrigues-Zahn, Lulu Arundale, Elena Plumb, Sarah Pence, Garrett Higgins and Bryce Victor. Closing the 2 ½-hour show was Anneka Miller singing “Astonishing.”

The technical crew under the direction of Gordon Richins and Spencer Keane, and video supervisor Nicki Yokota worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Students assisting included Liam Ghahreman, Kathryn Matthew, Joseph Tomaselli, Roy Cheng, Mark Gonzalez, David Jiang, Declan Landau, Jack Manor, and Daniel Policicchio.

Event co-chairs Kathryn Olsen and Elizabeth Plumb, with a team of PTF Arts Alliance volunteers, created a classy atmosphere for audience members who dined on appetizers, desserts and beverages prepared by caterer La Cuisine. Parent volunteer Laura Cowan managed the demand for tickets and ensured that everyone who wanted to view a performance was able to do so.
