Robotics Workshop Brings Teachers From Across Southern California to St. Margaret’s

Teachers and technology leaders from Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego took part in a day-long workshop in St. Margaret’s ICE Lab last month to learn about the Hummingbird Robotics Kit and its possibilities in the classroom.

The Hummingbird Robotics Kit was created in Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab by Birdbrain Robotics. It is an educational tool designed to introduce students to robotics and engineering, and allows programming in Arduino, Python, Java and Processing.

With the generosity of a PTF grant, St. Margaret’s technology department purchased Hummingbird Robotics and Coding Classroom kits for use in Lower School and Middle School classes. The workshop allowed faculty at St. Margaret’s and interested schools in the region to become better acquainted with the potential of robotics in the classroom.

Attendees built a robot using the Hummingbird kit and everyday art supplies, and picked up tips to integrate robotics into existing curriculum. Teachers from St. Margaret’s, Pegasus School, Hermosa View School, Harbor Day School and the Poway Unified School District were among the participants.

“There are so many possibilities for integrating coding and robotics into our curriculum,” ICE Lab manager Angela Mackenzie said. “This was a wonderful workshop and a great opportunity to explore possibilities envisioned by Birdbrain, an industry leader in educational robotics.”
