Tartan Cross Country Squads Win Academy League, Advance to CIF Prelims
Led by the impressive results of junior Andi Carnell and the girls varsity team, the Tartans dominated at the Academy League Championships.
The St. Margaret’s girls cross country team took five of the top 10 places to solidify a 23-point victory over third-ranked Sage Hill at the 2017 Academy League Championships. Andi Carnell set a torrid pace in the early stages of the race and had Sage Hill’s Brooklyn Button in tow for the majority of the time. With 800 meters to go, Carnell launched a series of moves that caused significant separation. She crossed the line in an impressive 17:39.
Charlotte Jones finished 3rd overall, followed by Madye Arundale in 4th and Daisy Sellas in 5th. Arundale had her shoe stepped on the first mile and ran a majority of the race with it falling off. She eventually shed the shoe with 400m to go and recorded the top freshman time of the day in 19:25.
The boys race turned into a dual meet between St. Margaret’s and Crean Lutheran as both teams put five runners in the top 10. The Tartans would come up nine points short of the title but recorded one of the fastest team times in recent school history on the Mason Park course. Matt Soto once again led the team with a 3rd-place finish in 15:51 and was joined by Robbie Graham, Bryant Villamil, Matt Colglazier, and Calvin Capelle with First Team All-League honors.
Both varsity teams will advance to the CIF Prelims on November 11th at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Meanwhile, the St. Margaret’s girls posted a perfect score of 15 to sweep the junior-varsity event. Led by race winner Whitney Kaemmer, St. Margaret’s captured seven of the top 10 places to gap second place Whitney High School by 53 points.
The JV boys took notice of the impressive performance by their female counterparts and produced similar results. They posted a perfect score of 15 behind race winner Chris Chan and some late race heroics by Thomson Liu and Phillip Doyle. The duo connected with the top runner from Whitney High School late in the race and surged into the top five with 600 meters to go.
“The JV team is the future of our program, and we take great pride in their development. Sweeping both events to open a meet sets an impressive tone for the day and was a remarkable accomplishment. This group works hard, and it’s nice to see their efforts pay off,” St. Margaret’s head coach Patrick Bendzick said.
