Upper School Students Perform Romeo and Juliet – See the Photos!

More than 60 Upper School students worked on the production, both on stage and behind the scenes, recreating the classic Shakespeare play.
After just six weeks of rehearsal, which included learning and memorization of challenging Shakespearian language, Upper School students completed four rousing performances of the iconic play Romeo & Juliet last weekend on the Hurlbut Theater stage.

More than 60 Upper School students worked on the production, both on stage and behind the scenes. The classic story of “Juliet and her Romeo” took place in what Director of the Arts Darcy Rice calls a “contemporary, but non-temporally specific world.” The play was performed without the aid of microphones, requiring students to perfect their vocal projection and fill the space of Hurlbut Theater with Shakespeare’s language.

“In a production like this, student learning happens in many different areas,” Director of the Arts Darcy Rice said. “First and foremost is Shakespeare’s language itself. The power of enactment brings a different understanding of the text, a robust connection with the language that is different from that encountered in a classroom setting. The experience of memorization allows students to internalize some of the most beautiful and powerful language ever written. Once memorized, this language becomes part of a rich inner landscape that will be a part of them forever.”

Behind the scenes, many Tartans worked to bring the classic Shakespeare story to life, including Stephanie Amoukhteh as stage manager, Madison Mafi as assistant stage manager and Zoe Mellard on makeup and hair design. Additional publicity was managed by Caroline Ullem.

“The elements of design including set, costume, lighting and sound come together to create a unified artistic vision,” Mr. Rice said. “This enables students to grow in appreciation of the different aspects of theater art and craft that come together with the actors to tell a powerful story.”

In all, 32 students made up the cast of characters, including Parker Ryan as Romeo and Katherine Sele as Juliet. You can view the playbill by clicking here
