Newcomers Excel in Tartan Cross Country League Opener

The Tartans opened the Academy League cross country season with impressive results on Tuesday.
In her first cross country race ever, Andi Carnell became a force to be reckoned with by finishing 4th in an elite field at the Cool Breeze Invitational on September 8. She proved that the impressive result was no fluke on Tuesday at the League Preview Meet at Cerritos Park.

Carnell went straight to the front in the early stages of the race and separated from the field with Brooklyn Button of Sage Hill in tow. The pair exchanged a series of surges until Carnell forced a 15-meter gap entering the 2-mile mark. She followed that with a strong press in the final mile and eventually crossed the line with her first win of the season in 18:38. Button finished second, 10 seconds back, but the Tartans took four of the top eight spots to secure the team win with 27 points.

"St. Margaret's is currently ranked third in Southern Section (Division 5), and Sage is close behind at fourth. Charlotte Jones, Daisy Sellas, and Ella Kang have added an element of depth to the rotation that is going to be difficult for teams to deal with. They are a fun group to coach, and they truly enjoy this rivalry," Head Coach Patrick Bendzick said.

After graduating three of the top five runners from 2016, the boys team has spent the summer developing depth and learning to run from the front. For the second week in a row, Matt Soto and Robbie Graham led the way for the Tartans finishing second and third respectively. Overall, the Tartans put five runners in the top 13, but it was not enough to overcome a 12-point gap established by 4th-ranked Crean Lutheran.

St. Margaret's took the top two posts in the JV girls race behind impressive performances by Alexis Woods and Whitney Kaemmer to secure a 44-point win. The JV boys were equally impressive with Grant Kinsey, Chris Chan and Will Reinkensmeyer going 1-2-3 in the race. They secured a 12-point win over second place Whitney.

The Tartans return to the race course for the second Academy League meet on October 3rd at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
