Library Launches Summer Reading Fun

The St. Margaret’s Library is launching two programs to keep Tartans reading throughout the summer.
The reading shouldn’t stop when the school year wraps up. The St. Margaret’s Library is launching two programs to keep Tartans reading throughout the summer.
The annual Library Summer Reading List is live, consisting of more than 100 titles and separated by grade level. The Summer Reading List is published annually by the Library and is compiled by the Library staff.

“Summer reading books are chosen because they are highly engaging,” said Darla Magana, director of Library services. “Best sellers, recent award winners and librarian favorites of the year are all considered.”

In addition, the Library has organized READO, a summer reading challenge for Lower School and Middle School students based on the popular game Bingo with books. If students read five books in categories that line up on the READO card, such as Newbery winners, a nonfiction book, a biography, a book recommended by a parent and a book from the Summer Reading List, students can turn in the card on the first day of school next year to take part in the READO celebration.

Numerous studies, including landmark research by Barbara Heyns, have proven the benefits of summer reading to help offset loss of academic skills and knowledge during time away from school.
