AP Spanish Students Read and Translate Books to Lower School Students

In the week following AP testing, the visit to the Lower School was a way for the Upper School students to hone leadership skills in working with younger students, as well as Spanish skills while translating words and phrases.
With Advanced Placement testing behind them, students in the Upper School’s AP Spanish language class worked on their language proficiency this week in front of an eager audience.

The AP students read Spanish-language books to students in several Lower School classrooms, from kindergarten through grade 2. Picture books like Clifford were chosen because they are easier for Lower School students to follow even with their early learning in Spanish. The AP students read the books in Spanish and then helped translate the story to the younger Tartans in English.

In the week following AP testing, the visit to the Lower School was a way for the Upper School students to hone leadership skills in working with younger students, as well as Spanish skills while translating words and phrases. It also served as an extra lesson for some of the Lower School students, who begin learning Spanish in grade 1 at St. Margaret’s.

“It’s good practice for the Upper School students to read aloud as regardless of langauge, reading aloud is a good presentational skill,” said Spanish teacher Marta Austin. "The Lower School students enjoy being with the Upper School students, and through what they have learned in the Lower School Spanish program, they are able to understand much of the children's stories they are read."
