‘Buzz Trap’ Science Project Wins Top Honors at ocMaker Challenge

The innovation by grade 8 students Espen Garner and Logan Wojcik won first place in the ocMaker Challenge’s level 4 category, beating out entries from high school and college students.
The innovative science project developed by St. Margaret’s grade 8 students Espen Garner and Logan Wojcik was awarded top prize at the 2017 ocMaker Challenge last week at Chapman University.

The two developed Buzz Trap, a 3D-printed mosquito trap affixed to a drone that allows for testing of mosquito-borne illnesses in hard-to-access areas. The innovation won first place in the ocMaker Challenge’s level 4 category, the most technical category which features prototypes “that include intelligent technology plus tooling/fabrication processes.” Buzz Trap beat out entries from high school and college students.

In addition, Espen and Logan won the middle school award for “most socially conscious.” In total, the two won $450 in prize money for winning the two categories.

“This was our first year participating in the ocMakers challenge and for the team of Espen and Logan to earn top honors in the highest division that included projects from area high school and college students was such a wonderful accomplishment,” grade 8 science teacher Eric Harrington said. “The creativity, innovation, and effort demonstrated by these two is inspiring.”

The annual ocMaker Challenge features middle school, high school and community college students who use 3D modeling, 3D printing and other advanced technologies to build prototypes of products aimed at solving real-world problems. The competition is organized by the Orange County Department of Education’s Career Technical Education Partnership, Career Technical Education of Orange County and Vital Link.

Buzz Trap recently won St. Margaret’s Tartan Tank, an event created by Mr. Harrington which spotlights entrepreneurial science projects and pitches them to venture capitalists. Espen also submitted Buzz Trap to the Orange County Science Fair and won first-place honors in applied mechanics as well as three special recognitions—the Isenberg Memorial Award, the Office of Naval Research Award and the Beckman Chapman Design and Engineering Award. For winning the Beckman Chapman Award, Buzz Trap will be on display at Chapman University.
