Middle School Coed Soccer Wins the South County Championship
The Tartans won their fourth straight championship defeating St. John's in a wild 3-2 overtime finish.
The Large School Coed A soccer team entered the season with some serious question marks. After promoting a talented grade 8 class from last season’s championship squad, the Tartans set out to prove that they had the mettle and determination to leave their own high mark—and they did just that, winning a thrilling championship game to defend their title.
After finishing the regular season with a 5-0-1 record, the Tartans entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. In the semifinals, St. Margaret's found themselves down to a resolute St. Anne's squad 1-0 at halftime. But the Tartans rallied in spirit and won 6-1 to earn a fourth consecutive trip to the South County Coed Soccer Championship match.
In the final, the Tartans faced a very athletic St. John's team who came out to avenge an earlier 2-1 regular season loss. Using a very direct attack and a speedy frontline, the Cardinals were up on the Tartans 1-0 within the first few minutes of the match. For most of the game, St. Margaret’s battled and fought to stay in the game. With about 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Bryce Chan hit a remarkable free kick that dipped under the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands to knot the game at 1-1.
The first few seconds of overtime mirrored the start of the match with St. John’s scoring a goal in the first 30 seconds of overtime. Once again, the Tartans found themselves facing an uphill climb down 2-1 with less than 10 minutes to play in overtime. At the start of the second five minute overtime period, the Tartans ramped up their defensive pressure, winning the ball back near the Cardinal goal.
Their effort paid off when Matt Groeninger beat the defense bringing the ball down the center of the field for a shot. Peter Mack struck a thunderous shot off Groeninger’s rebound to breathe new life into the hopeful Tartans. On a follow-up Tartan counterattack Mack crossed the ball to an open Molly Green. Her initial shot was saved by the goalkeeper but Green’s shot off the rebound was clinically done giving the Tartans the 3-2 victory, assuring the Tartans as champions again in the most improbable manner--coming from behind twice to a worthy opponent.
