St. Margaret’s Student-Athletes Commit to Colleges Across the Nation During Spring National Signing Day

Five student-athletes from the Class of 2017 commited to play intercollegiate athletics during the spring signing day, joining fellow seniors who committed during the winter signing period.
St. Margaret's Episcopal School is pleased to announce that five student-athletes from the Class of 2017 committed to play intercollegiate athletics next year during the Spring National Signing Day. Seniors Blake Crawley, James Eidt, Nic Gitter, Catherine Landaas, and Izzy Oedekerk will continue their academic pursuits, as well as play their respective sport at an impressive group of colleges and universities.

These student-athletes will join 10 of their classmates who committed during signing periods earlier in the year.

Blake Crawley, Trinity College

Blake Crawley, a 2016-2017 soccer team captain, will play soccer at NCAA Division III Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

Blake is a two-time All-CIF First team selection and four-year All-Academy League honoree for the 2014 CIF-SS Division V Champion Tartans. Blake was tabbed as an All-Orange County Team member for the 2016-2017 season as the No. 2 goal scorer in the county. At. St. Margaret's, Blake also holds the St. Margaret’s freshman cross-country course record at Irvine Regional Park.

Blake has participated as a Soccer Without Borders mentor in Nicaragua and as a counselor for Special Camp for Special Kids. Blake intends to major in neuroscience at Trinity College.

James Eidt, Lake Forest College

James Eidt, a defensive end and wide receiver for the Tartans, will play football at NCAA Division III Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill.

James, a four-year varsity letterman in football at St. Margaret's, led the team with 118 tackles and 13 sacks during the 2016 season. Along with being a member of the 2014 CIF-SS and CIF State Regional championship football teams, James is also a member of the 2015 U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Champion Tartan lacrosse team. James has also participated in the swimming and diving, surf and track & field programs at St. Margaret's.

James has volunteered his time at the Brookdale Senior Assisted Living Center.

James intends to major in psychology at Lake Forest College.

Nic Gitter, Tufts University

Nic Gitter, a four-year varsity letterman in both cross country and track & field, and four-time USA Track & Field Junior Olympic cross-country competitor, will compete in both cross country and track & field at NCAA Division III Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

Nic was a three-time CIF State competitor in cross country while being named All-CIF for 2016. A three-time All-Academy League selection in cross-country, Nic was named Academy League MVP in 2016 while leading the Tartans to the league championship in 2015 and 2016. Nic, a 2012 USATF Youth Boys National Champion in cross country, was also the 2016 Academy League champion in the 1600m and 3200m in track & field.

Nic plans on accomplishing an interdisciplinary major in Chinese, music engineering, and entrepreneurial leadership studies at Tufts.

Catherine Landaas, Westmont College

Catherine Landaas, a 2016 varsity tennis team co-captain, will play tennis at NAIA member Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Catherine, who attained an overall record of 48-8 in 2016, led the Tartans to 2nd place in the Academy League in 2015 and 2016 and reached round three in CIF-SS Division II championships in 2016.

Catherine has been very involved on the St. Margaret's campus, acting as co-president of the peer counseling program, a member of the St. Margaret's Admissions Ambassadors and president of the SPARK club during her junior and senior years. Catherine volunteers at the Shea Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano and has acted as a foster for a service dog through Orange County Service Dogs.

Catherine intends to major in biology at Westmont.

Izzy Oedekerk, Chapman University - Dodge College of Film and Media Arts

Izzy Oedekerk, a USTA Tournament competitor, will play tennis at Chapman University in Orange, Calif.

Izzy has competed for the Tartans in tennis, winning the Academy League Doubles Championship and battling through the CIF-SS Quarterfinals in 2016. Izzy was also named Academy League MVP for her singles and doubles play.

At the amateur level, Izzy is ranked in the top 50 in both California and the southwestern United States by the USTA.

Izzy intends on majoring in film production at Chapman.

"There is a wide variety of sports represented in this year’s group of college-bound athletes and it’s a display of how their influence continues to create positive momentum in the athletic department," said Director of Athletics Patrick Bendzick. "Because of their example, becoming a college athlete is on the radar of many students at St. Margaret’s and it’s an honor to help them in that process. I have admired their relentless pursuit of this goal and their dedication is an inspiration to us all."
