The surf team's recent "Surf-a-Thon" raised awareness and money for a bevy of non-profit organizations.
On Thursday, February 9, the St. Margaret's surf team set out to accomplish a team goal to liven up the routine practice schedule. Thirteen surfers set a goal to catch as many waves as possible in a 60-minute period. On top of the personal/athletic goal, the team sought out sponsors to support a non-profit organization that each member personally researched and connected with. Each wave caught would financially benefit their chosen charity.
Despite foggy and quiet conditions at Salt Creek Beach, the surfers were able to catch a total of 128 waves. The group was very excited to be able to directly benefit organizations such as; Kids Around the World, Surfers Healing, Corazón de Vida, Heifer International, Project Mexico and Surfrider Foundation. Once completed, the team will have given well over $1,000 to the chosen charities.
Head coach Peter Soderin, who hatched the idea of the Surf-a-Thon, remarked, "In my experience, the modern day tribe of traveling surfers is one of the most culturally sensitive and internationally competent subcultures on the planet. It is this mindfulness and global perspective that assistant coach Josh Baldwin and I wish to impart to the St. Margaret’s surf team members and others in their social circles."
