Tartan Cross Country, Golf and Tennis Teams Have Outstanding Week

The Tartans have reached the mid-way point of the Academy League season with the cross country, golf and tennis programs enjoying recent success.
Cross Country

The Tartan boys cross country team retained control of the Academy League with a decisive team performance Tuesday at Central Park in Huntington Beach. Charlie Smith bolted from the starting line and went wire-to-wire for the win en route to helping his team post a 15-point victory over second place Crean Lutheran. Smith was dominant in running away from the field, and his teammates took notice as the Tartans put six runners in the top 12. Matt Soto posted the performance of the day, shaving 1:38 off his time on this course in 2015 to finish 4th overall.

As the weeks pass, the girls’ team continues to inch closer to CIF-SS #2 Sage Hill. In just her third week on the team, freshman standout Charlotte Jones proved to be the difference-maker this week with a 6th-place finish overall. Her aggressive running on the downhill pulled several Tartans into position, and the group took four of the top 10 finishing places as a result. Their team time of 1:43.04 was over 4 minutes faster than 2015 and the gap to first place was just six points.

Both teams remain in contention to secure Academy League titles later this month, but they will shift their focus to some major invitationals in the next couple of weekends. The team travels to Fresno on Friday to preview the state meet course and will battle several regional powers on October 14 at the Orange County Championships in Irvine Park.

Girls Golf

The Tartans improved their season record to 6-6 and Academy League record to 4-4 with a win over Crean Lutheran on Tuesday. St. Margaret's was led by senior Nicole Brynjolfsson's 42, junior Marissa Mitchell's 48, senior Alexis Brynjolfsson's 54, sophomore Natalie Yee's 54 and sophomore Bella Blount's 62.

The Tartans return to action Thursday, October 6 against Whitney High School.

Girls Tennis

St. Margaret's currently commands a 3-0 Academy League record and 7-3 overall mark after defeating Whitney High School 12-6 on Tuesday.

Coach Dana Bozeman remarked about the Tartans’ play so far, "We have been playing really well this season. Our top doubles squad of Catherine Landaas and Reilly Parkhill have great chemistry, and I am looking forward to what they can accomplish this season."

The Tartans will face league rival Sage Hill School on Friday, October 7 on the road.
