Tartan Track & Field Eyes League Title With Win at Santa Ana
St. Margaret's athletes overcame a tough Saints squad Thursday.
The Tartan track and field program faced a strong Santa Ana team and performed above and beyond yesterday, positioning themselves to contend for a league championship.
Great performances from Everett Capelle and Caden Gazzaniga led the boys program, with No. 7-ranked Capelle notching a big win in the 1600m, where he faced off against the No. 1 through 3-ranked runners in the league. Capelle would also go on to win the 800m, where he again faced the No. 1-ranked runner in the Orange Coast League. Gazzaniga continued the momentum by securing two big dominant wins in the 400m and 200m, which set up the Tartans to secure the win. The 4x4 relay would close out the meet with a win and the Tartan victory. St. Margaret's would finish ahead 87-41.
The girls track and field program made quick work of Santa Ana, securing the meet victory before the 200m race took off. A consistent and powerhouse 4x1 would once again start the Tartans off on the right foot cruising to an easy victory. Great performances from Yadany Lievanos in the 300 hurdles, Ava Klausner in the high jump, Coco Johnson in the 400m, Sophia Karahalios in the 200m, and Joyce Li in the 800m would secure the 90-36 win for the Tartans.
"We have a really well-balanced girls' team that can excel from any angle, which makes them a tough team to beat," said head coach Edgar Vazquez. "The boys had to come out big today to secure this victory. When we projected scores, it was a tight meet, but the boys performed well and were clutch today, which led to a dominant victory. Both teams are building confidence and now know they belong in this league."
