Tartan Girls Basketball Crowned CIF Champions in Historic Win

St. Margaret's girls basketball team defeated Gahr 44-33 in CIF Div. 5AA Championship on Saturday.
The St. Margaret’s girls basketball program wrote a new chapter in the history of Tartan athletics, winning the school's first CIF championship in girls basketball with a 44-33 win over Gahr High School in Huntington Beach on Saturday.

The Tartans held a slight 18-17 lead heading into halftime before pilling on a 10-0 run in the third quarter to keep the Gladiators on their heels in the second half. A Gahr comeback in the fourth narrowed St. Margaret's lead to 36-31, but the Tartans responded with a 6-0 spurt to close the door. The clock finally hit zero and set off a big celebration, as the Tartans were presented their CIF plaque and celebrated with a big crowd of Tartan supporters in attendance at Edison High School.

St. Margaret's (27-6) was led by senior Kaitlin Tam (12 pts, 9 rbs) and freshmen Taylor Francois (11 pts, 10 rbs) and Annika Tufo (8 pts, 9 rbs).

"One of the things we hang our hat on is toughness," Tartan head coach Josh Markum told the Orange County Register. "The way we rebounded and played defense at the end and holding a team under 40 points in a final, that's just tough for anybody."
