Tartan Basketball Programs Poised For Postseason Success

St. Margaret's is wrapping up the regular season slate and preparing for the CIF-SS playoffs.
St. Margaret's basketball programs have enjoyed a successful run through the Orange Coast League schedule and are looking forward to starting CIF-SS postseason play next week.

Girls basketball, currently ranked No. 1 in Div. 5AA, faces Capistrano Valley on Friday evening at home to attempt to pick up a 22nd regular season victory. If successful, the win would mark a new school record for most wins in a season.

The Tartans have been led all season by sophomore Harper Gideons, who has averaged 12 points per game in the 22-23 campaign. Turnovers have been the name of the game for St. Margaret's, as the Tartans have forced opponents to more than 30 turnovers per game.

"Our girls are peaking at the right time," said head coach Josh Markum. "We are playing our best team basketball as we gear up for the playoffs and have the potential to make a deep run if we continue to focus on details on the defensive end."

On the boys side, CIF-SS Div. 4AA No. 6 St. Margaret’s looks to make history as well. With 21 wins, the Tartans look to pick up No. 22 as they face Capistrano Valley at home Friday night. With the win, the Tartans would shatter the boys basketball school season win record that has stood for 20 years.

St. Margaret's has relied on a total team effort with Russell Frye, Cameron Danz, TJ Pavia and Drew Bowman averaging double figures as the regular season winds down. Frye has been stellar for the Tartans, averaging 7.5 boards and 5 assists per game.

"After a successful regular season, we are looking forward to competing in the playoffs," said head coach Chris Nordstrom. "With our demanding non-league schedule, the team is battle-tested, and if we can remain healthy should be competitive in a deep playoff division."

The Tartans now await the playoff bracket draws, which are set to occur on Sunday, Feb. 5 at noon.
