Tartan Writers and Artists Honored With Regional Scholastic Awards

St. Margaret's won 73 art awards and 28 writing awards in the West Coast Regional At-Large Division, including 23 gold key winners.
St. Margaret’s talented writers and artists in the Upper School and Middle School were recognized in the 2023 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Tartans won 73 art awards and 28 writing awards in the West Coast Regional At-Large Divisions. That total includes 23 gold key winners, which will be forwarded for judging in the national competition.
 
Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards has recognized art and writing works in 28 different categories for students grades 7-12. Judges look for what that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Gold Keys are considered the very best works submitted regionally.
 
Art
St. Margaret’s had 14 Gold Key winners in art categories, along with 21 Silver Key winners and 38 honorable mentions.
 
The 14 Gold Key winners were from 13 different students. Senior Kevin Chou won two Gold Keys for his photography pieces.
 
Other Gold Key winners were Julius Caggiano, Nicole Chen, Kate D’Amaro, Mari Edler, Isabella Karmis, Emma Kim, Sabrina Kim, Kate Lee, Dawson Mai, Spencer Olvera-Harle, Madeline Scott and Brennan Sullivan.

Writing
In writing, St. Margaret’s had nine Gold Key winners, 11 Silver Key winners and eight honorable mentions.
 
Senior Tina Mai four Gold Keys for her writing in a variety of categories. She was honored with two Gold Keys in poetry, for her works “Grandmother” and “Good Fools” along with a Gold Key in personal essay & memoir, and another in critical essay.
 
Senior Winston Verdult won two Gold Keys in writing, both in the category of personal essay & memoir. Also earning a Gold Key were Eva Dandel, Amber Lin and Rishabh Mallela.
