PHOTOS: Parent Up Speaker Dr. Nii Addy Presents to Tartans on ‘Living Your Best Life’

His presentations at St. Margaret’s focused on living one’s best life, exploring the science behind self-care and introducing ways to support ourselves.
The 2022-2023 PTF Parent Up Speaker Series continued last week, as St. Margaret’s welcomed Dr. Nii Addy to campus for presentations to both the parent community and Upper School students.

Dr. Addy is an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University who hosts The Addy Hour podcast and holds events exploring neuroscience, mental health, faith, culture and social justice. His presentations at St. Margaret’s focused on living one’s best life, exploring the science behind self-care and ways to support ourselves as we take on life’s numerous tasks.

Many aspects of self-care were explored, from the need for good sleep each night to the important value of community in each other’s lives. He reflected on how meditation, mindfulness and prayer can boost mental health, and answered questions about brain development and more.

Dr. Addy’s presentation aligned well with the Parent Up Speaker Series theme of 2022-2023, “Helping Young People Thrive.” Dr. Addy gave a similar talk for the Upper School student body during community time, where he urged students to navigate wellness daily, and invest in each other by supporting members of their various communities.

The PTF Parent Up Speaker Series is an educational initiative generously funded by the PTF Grant Enrichment Program working in unison with St. Margaret’s academic leaders. This year’s Parent Up Speaker Series committee includes PTF President Jessica Klausner, Parent Up Speaker Series Chair Melinda Glowacki, Parent Up Speaker Series assistant Rosanna Coveyou, St. Margaret’s Assistant Head of School Ryan Dahlem, Director of Equity and Inclusion Victor Cota and PTF Office Manager Beth Adamany.

The final PTF Parent Up Speaker of the 2022-2023 school year will be Dr. Michele Borba on Friday, March 17. Dr. Borba is a psychologist, educator and author who is known for her solution-based strategies to strengthen children’s social-emotional intelligence and character.
