St. Margaret’s Celebrates Lunar New Year With Activities and Education—See the Photos!

St. Margaret’s celebrated and recognized Lunar New Year this week, with activities including Chapel homilies, playground games and educational touchpoints with help from the Upper School’s Tartan Inclusion and Diversity Education (TIDE) student leadership group. 

The Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world, and is also referred to as the Spring Festival in many cultures. The holidays lasts 15 days until the first full moon of the Lunar Calendar, and its start date ranges from January 21 to February 20. 

 

Here is a look at some of the activities at St. Margaret’s that rang in the Year of the Rabbit. 

 

 

Two members of the Upper School TIDE student leadership group visited grade 3 to talk about the significance of the Lunar New Year.

 

One TIDE student, Abby Sun, shared how she celebrates the Lunar New Year in her family. A second student, Jada Thompson, shared that although she does not celebrate Lunar New Year in her home, she knows it’s important to understand and celebrate the cultures and traditions of her friend. 

 

 

St. Margaret’s had two professional community members share their insight on Lunar New Year. Leah Zhang, advancement campaign coordinator, spoke to the Lower School on the significance of Luna New Year in the Chinese community. 

 

Father Earl Gibson spoke this week at Chapel, sharing his extensive Lunar New Year collection of Legos and the story behind them. 

 

 

In addition to some classroom observations, the Lower School played Lunar New Year Bingo on the playground, and posed for photos in front of a beautiful Lunar New Year display.
