Girls Basketball and Soccer Squeeze Orange for Crucial Mid-Season Victories
The Tartans faced off against the Panthers at home Thursday evening.
St. Margaret's picked up important league wins in girls basketball and girls soccer Thursday night, setting the Tartans up for postseason contention.
Girls Basketball
The Tartans struggled to find a rhythm against Orange High School Thursday evening but buckled down and came away with a 59-25 win to improve to 11-4 and 4-1 in Orange Coast League play.
Tartan freshmen were a bright spot for St. Margaret's, with Lila Wohlgemuth (12 pts.) and Annika Tufo (10 pts.) leading the way. Taylor Francois and Addie West led the team in steals with five and six steals, respectively. Senior Lauren Lam kept St. Margaret's on top, contributing seven points and four steals in the win.
"I am really proud of the way our girls competed," said head coach Josh Markum. "Credit to Orange, as this was a very difficult game to find a consistent rhythm, but our girls put together a great third quarter and played well off of each other defensively."
The Tartans return to play on Saturday, Jan. 7, facing Mission Viejo High School on the road.
Girls Soccer
Charlotte Quintanar came off the bench to spark the Tartans to a 1-0 win over visiting Orange Thursday afternoon, keeping an Annika Garner cross alive in the box before redirecting to Emma Tomlinson, who found the back of the net in the 17th minute.
St. Margaret's battled the Panthers all game with leadership provided by Liesel Blau and Avery Ainsworth, securing the essential league point.
The Tartans (4-5 overall, 4-1 league) have only conceded two goals in league matches and will next face Orange Coast League opponent Costa Mesa at home on Thursday, Jan. 12.
