PHOTOS: Grade 1 Students Learn and Serve During Field Trip at the Beach

St. Margaret’s grade 1 students this week took a field trip down to the beach in Dana Point—a visit that brought together their learning of science, social studies and service.

 

The students visited The Ocean Institute for part of the trip, learning more about animal habitats and different ocean creatures from hermit crabs to starfish.

 

For the second part of the trip, the grade 1 Tartans were joined by two Upper School students—Alexander Holland and Hayden Mann—who are part of the Surfrider Club in the Upper School. Alexander and Hayden led a beach clean-up with the grade 1 students, just a few days after visiting their classrooms to explain to students the importance of keeping our coastline clean.  

 

The field trip tied into grade 1’s current social studies focus on community, in addition to aligning with the grade’s United Nations Sustainable Goal on responsible consumption and production.

 

“It was a beautiful day to spend time learning about and serving our local community,” grade 1 teacher Colleen Beshk said. “The Upper School students served as role models and truly inspired the students to care for our beaches.”
