Middle School Flag Football Team Notches Historic Win for P.A.L. Title
The Tartans claimed the Parochial Athletic League championship in a thrilling 24-22, triple-overtime victory.
In the Parochial Athletic League’s own version of “Thursday Night Lights,” St. Margaret’s Middle School Mountain flag football team made the drive up to Anaheim to face St. Anne in the league championship game.
And what a game it turned out to be.
The Tartans claimed the Parochial Athletic League championship in a 24-22, triple-overtime victory. It is the first flag football championship in school history, after several close calls over the years.
St. Anne came out strong and built a 20-6 lead going into halftime, but the Tartans regrouped and came out determined to play a better second half of football. By playing tenacious defense, the Tartans were able to stop the Knights several times on third and fourth down which gave them the opportunity to put points on the board with their offense.
With the score at 22-14 in favor of the Knights and not much time left in the game, the Tartans took the ball down the field and scored on a great pass in the end zone. The ensuing two-point conversion was successful and the game was tied at 22-all with little time left on the clock.
It then took three overtimes but after batting down a pass by the Knights, the Tartans stepped to the line for a two-point possession and made a great play in the corner of the end zone to seal the victory.
The win capped off a competitive P.A.L. season. Four teams tied for first place in a strong Mountain League. The Tartans’ first playoff win came against St. Simon and Jude, followed by an always strong St. Mary’s team in a rain-soaked game the Tartans won, 20-14. That victory advanced them to the semifinals against top-seeded St. John the Baptist, and the Tartans secured a tough 26-20 win. The coaches knew the championship game was going to be battle against St. Anne, as they split league games with them during the regular season.
After the Tartans received their championship trophy and T-shirts, they gathered together and realized they had just done something no other middle school football team had accomplished in the history of St. Margaret’s. It made their postgame smiles even wider.
