Tartan Football is Postseason Bound After 49-22 win Over CC Santa Ana

St. Margaret's poured it on in the second half to secure the playoff berth.
A 49-22 win over hosts Calvary Chapel Santa Ana on Thursday evening has sent St. Margaret's football program to the CIF-SS playoffs for the 21st consecutive season. Despite an 0-6 season start, the Tartans rattled off four quality wins to close out the 2022 campaign with a third-place finish in the Orange Coast League.
 
A bright star for the Tartans on Thursday, Sam Dunnell hauled in two touchdown receptions, and compiled 107 yards receiving, three tackles and two interceptions to lead St. Margaret's in the crucial victory. Quarterback Max Ruff also had a big game, punching in two touchdowns on the ground and throwing for 209 yards, completing 12 of 18 passes with three touchdowns.
 
Receiver Derek Smith caught six balls for 83 yards. and one touchdown, while Maverick Young caught two passes for 42 yards. Running back Andrew Miehe contributed 84 yards on nine rushing attempts.
 
Defensively the Tartans held the Eagles at bay, limiting CC Santa Ana to eight points in the second half. Maverick Young led the way with five tackles and one interception return for a touchdown. Owen Binder also returned a pick for a score and notched three tackles on the night. Leo Curran was tenacious all evening, recording five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, while Andrew Miehe had nine tackles in the win.
 
The Tartans (4-6, 4-2 league) now await the playoff draw, which will be published on Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. with a likely first-round game on Friday, Nov. 4. St. Margaret's looks to bring home its sixth CIF-SS Championship, having won in 1989, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2014.
