Tartan Dance Launches New Buddy Program to Bring Students of All Ages Together

This year, Tartan Dance launched the buddy program, a cross-divisional touchpoint matching a Lower School dancer with either a Middle School or Upper School dancer for a year of connection, mentorship and learning.
St. Margaret’s dance program spans all divisions and all grades of the school, with more than 140 dancers participating this school year.

“It is one of the few programs on campus that provides curriculum and instruction for every single division,” Director of Dance Kirsten Harvey said. “Finding cross-divisional opportunities for social, emotional, and curricular engagement is an important and necessary part of dance at St. Margaret’s.”

The first buddy experience took place earlier this month, as dancers of all ages gathered in the dance studio for a buddy party. Dancers were matched with their buddy and had an opportunity to share their favorite dance styles and other common interests. Mrs. Harvey then led the students through dance bonding activities including a secret dance handshake and a Soul Train-style dance line where buddies showed off their favorite dance moves. They also enjoyed pizza and treats.

“It was such a wonderful experience to see the dancers connecting with one another,” Mrs. Harvey said.

The buddy dance program will continue throughout the school year. In addition to fun get-togethers and activities during the Winter Dance Concert and the Spring Dance Concert, older buddies will attend at least one dance class with their little buddy. Many have also expressed interest in getting together for after-school dance classes.
