Former St. Margaret’s Football Coach Harry Welch Inducted Into CIF-SS Hall of Fame

Coach Welch led the Tartans during one of the greatest stretches in St. Margaret’s history, compiling a 42-1 record, three CIF-SS championships and the 2008 CIF state championship.
Harry Welch, St. Margaret’s head football coach from 2007 to 2009, was inducted into the CIF Southern Section Hall of Fame today as part of the 38th class of honorees.

In his storied 24-year coaching career, Coach Welch led the Tartans during one of the greatest stretches in St. Margaret’s history, compiling a 42-1 record, three CIF-SS championships, the 2008 CIF state championship and a 30-game winning streak. Coach Welch also served as head football coach for Canyon High School and Santa Margarita High School. In total, he compiled a 256-60-2 record, winning nine CIF-SS championships and three CIF state championships. He is the only coach in California history to win three state championships at three different schools.

CIF-SS Commission of Athletics Rob Wigod said, “We are excited to honor and recognize our 2022 CIF Southern Section Hall of Fame winners. This illustrious group of individuals represents true excellence for their dedication on to education-based athletics and their accomplishments in service to our member schools and to our organization as a whole. The CIF-SS ceremony took place at The Grand Conference Center in Long Beach, and St. Margaret’s Head of School Will Moseley, Athletics Director Patrick Bendzick, Board of Trustees President Paul Westhead, and immediate past Board of Trustees President and current Trustee Jason Weiss were among the large audience, including former St. Margaret’s football players and alumni parents, there to celebrate Coach Welch’s honoring. 

“We are very proud of all Tartans, student-athletes and coaches, who were a part of this historic period of success in our football program during Coach Welch’s tenure. This exciting time in our St. Margaret’s story holds a special place in the hearts and minds of all Tartans, and we are pleased to reminisce as a community and celebrate and congratulate Coach Welch on this tremendous honor,” said Mr. Moseley.

Coach Bendzick added, “Coach Welch led winning teams to CIF Championships at three different schools. That is very impressive, and we join in congratulating him for this very special, well-deserved honor and recognition by CIF.”
