PHOTOS: Lower School Starts ‘Scottie Snack Cart’ With Nutritious Food Options—And it’s a Hit

Students in all Lower School grades took a break from their recess time to grab fruits and vegetables served by St. Margaret’s parents and professional community members.
St. Margaret’s unveiled its new health and well-being program this week, as Lower School students were able to snack on nutritious fruits and vegetables during their recess time from the new “Scottie Snack Cart.”
 
While the actual cart is being completed, the snacks were set up on tables for this week’s roll-out. It proved popular, as students in all Lower School grades took a break from their recess time Thursday to grab pieces of nectarines, carrots and cucumbers, served by St. Margaret’s parents and professional community members. It was preceded by an educational touchpoint shared in all homerooms, where the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables was discussed and students were encouraged to stop by during their recess time.
 
The cart was made possible by a nutrition education PTF grant, in partnership with Upper School student Chase Springer and several professional community members who met multiple times to work out the details. The fruits and vegetables were grown nearby at The Ecology Center, an educational partner of St. Margaret’s.
 
“We are excited to start this program and are thankful for the support of the PTF and the professional community to make this initiative a reality,” Lower School Principal Jennifer Blount said. “It is our hope that students will not only enjoy these healthy snacks, but will also take this experience home and request fruits and vegetables in their daily meals and their school snacks.”
 
The Scottie Snack Cart will be out during Lower School recess once a month throughout this school year.
