Lower School Celebrates International Dot Day With Creative iLab Activities

St. Margaret’s Lower School iLab was a busy place this week, as students celebrated International Dot Day with creative activities during their technology block.

 

International Dot Day, inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, is a global celebration which encourages students to embrace their spirit of creativity and use it to inspire others. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark.”

 

St. Margaret’s has celebrated International Dot Day in different creative ways for many years. This year, grade 4 and grade 5 students tried something new: by making glyphs, or a pictograph that displays data.

 

The students answered questions about hobbies, likes and dislikes. Their data was compiled in creation of a dot glyph that represents their interest. Students then used their digital design skills and creativity to “make their mark” and bring uniqueness to their glyph.

 

Students in kindergarten through grade 3 also celebrated Dot Day, using the augmented reality app Quiver to make a colored dot on a piece of paper come to life as a three-dimensional piece of digital art.
