Junior Class Dedicates Two Full Days to College-Admissions Process As Part of Enhanced Curriculum

The College Counseling Team arranged two days of education and activities specific to the college-admissions process, part of an expanded curriculum for the junior class launched earlier this year.
Students in St. Margaret’s Class of 2023 spent two days this week engaged with the College Counseling Team in preparation for the college-admissions process which awaits them as seniors. 
 
St. Margaret’s college counselors—Director of College Counseling Elise Rodriguez, Senior Associate Director of College Counseling Amy Warren and Associate Director of College Counseling Erica Huerta—arranged two full days of education and activities specific to the college-admissions process, part of an expanded curriculum for the junior class launched earlier this year. The increased time with the College Counseling team is an effort to build time into the school day for the college-admissions process and the important education around it.  
 
The first day was a workshop, where students learned more about college admissions and developed skills relevant to the application process. The students moved between three rotations, which included: 
 
  • “Holistic Admissions and a Brief History of College Admissions” led by Ms. Rodriguez and Ffinoa Rees, admissions representative from the University of California, Los Angeles. 
 
  • “Making the Most of Your Application While Being Authentic” led by Ms. Warren and Jackie Burkett, admissions representative from the University of San Diego. 
 
  • “The Personal Statement” writing workshop led by Upper School English teachers Blake Reemstma and Dallas Clemmons. 
 
The day closed with a presentation by St. Margaret’s college counselors as well as All-School Counselor Janice Avalone, who spoke with students about what to expect in the transition from high school to college. 
 
The next day, the Class of 2023 joined the College Counseling Team on a trip to the Claremont Colleges, a group of adjacent schools which include Pomona College, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Pitzer College. The students listened to presentations with five directors of admission at the colleges, then took self-guided tours of the campuses.  
 
This week’s activities were the last of five school-day workshops that took place this spring, as the Class of 2023 moves closer to the official start of their college admissions process at the beginning of their senior year.
