Grade 5 Students Learn About Human Body Systems From Special Guest

Dr. Susie Yeh, a St. Margaret’s parent and medical doctor specializing in pulmonary diseases, presented to all three grade 5 classes during their science block last week.
St. Margaret’s grade 5 students were treated to a special guest speaker last week, as Dr. Susie Yeh, a St. Margaret’s parent and medical doctor specializing in pulmonary diseases, presented to all three grade 5 classes during their science block last week.

Dr. Yeh shared her expertise with the students on how the respiratory and cardiovascular systems work together to deliver oxygen to the cells of the body. Her presentation was complemented by many questions from curious grade 5 students about how the human body works, from the important job of organs like the epiglottis to prevent choking, to the phenomenon of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.

Afterward, Dr. Yeh generously provided each student with a medical grade stethoscope to take home to practice listening to the heart and lungs of their family members and pets.

“It was so exciting having a pulmonary doctor and grade 5 mother here to reinforce and extend some of the concepts we are learning about the human body in our science lessons. It is always a treat when a SMES parent can share their expertise and passion for lives of learning with our students,” Lower School science teacher David Beshk said.
