Early Childhood School Teachers Present at Orange County Reggio Roundtable

Ms. Petrozzi and Dr. Hardison discussed how children construct empathy through experiences in the natural world, and how empathy toward nature is transferred to empathy for others.
St. Margaret’s Early Childhood School teachers Hope Petrozzi and Jennifer Hardison recently led a presentation for the Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children (OCAEYC) titled “Growing Social Justice: Nature as a Lens for Constructing Empathy”
 
The online webinar was well-attended by educators from Orange County and even as far away as Colorado, as part of the Orange County’s Reggio Roundtable in conjunction with OCAEYC.
 
Ms. Petrozzi and Dr. Hardison discussed how children construct empathy through experiences in the natural world, and how empathy toward nature is transferred to empathy for others. They also explored the role of nature in children’s construction of knowledge, and provided example of children’s growth in empathy and understanding others’ perspectives.
 
The two shared a similar presentation last fall at the international conference of the Association for Constructivist Teaching, which was a hybrid event hosted by St. Margaret’s.
