Advanced Upper School Spanish Students Visit Museum of Latin American Art

The museum offered a relevant and important learning opportunity for the students, as they observed and analyzed Latino and Chicano art.
Upper School students in AP Spanish language and culture and advanced study: Spanish culture and conversation recently took a field trip to the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach.

The museum is the only one in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art. It offered a relevant and important learning opportunity for the students, as they observed and analyzed Latino and Chicano art. In particular, students spent time in an exhibit currently in place by famed Chicana artist Judy Baca which addresses issues of gender, race, gentrification and migration for the Latin and Chicano communities.

World languages teacher Bryan Sullivan—who led the trip along with visual arts department chair Jesse Standlea—said that two units of study for the upcoming AP Spanish language and culture exam deal with “beauty and aesthetics” and “global challenges,” and the trip to Long Beach was a valuable learning experience in their study of Latin American culture.

In addition to emphasizing advanced proficiency in the Spanish language, the AP and advanced study Spanish courses at St. Margaret’s study current events, politics and the arts in the Spanish-speaking world.
