St. Margaret’s Upper School students celebrated Black History Month through a variety of educational touchpoints, fundraisers and more.

At both Upper School and Middle School chapels last week, Upper School students Elie Shook and Emelie Miller shared their enthusiasm for Black History Month and what it means to them during a homily.  They also shared a film that explains the ways in which Black History Month can be celebrated and how people around the country work to honor it. Elie and Emelie are active participants in the student-led Black and African American affinity group, and they each shared how that experience has supported their sense of self and belonging at St. Margaret’s.

In addition, St. Margaret’s Tartan Inclusivity and Diversity Education (TIDE) student leadership group partnered with the Black and African American affinity group to have a bake sale during Thursday’s lunch, with all proceeds benefiting California State University, Fullerton’s African-American Resource Center.

Black History Month in the United States has been a month-long celebration since 1976, though celebrating African-American history during the month of February—which was selected to coincide with the birth months of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass—dates back to 1926.
