Tartans Down Valley Christian to Advance to Boys Soccer CIF-SS Quarterfinals

St. Margaret's held on for a 1-0 win Tuesday evening.
Despite being held scoreless for 75 minutes and playing through a sudden downpour, St. Margaret's boys soccer team triumphed over visiting Valley Christian, 1-0, to secure a ticket to the CIF-SS Div. V Quarterfinal round. The Tartans and Defenders traded scoring opportunities in the first half but remained knotted 0-0 through most of the second half.

Marcelo Cruz-Sanchez finally broke the stalemate in the 75th minute, capitalizing on a soaring cross by Matt Groeninger. The Tartans rode out the rest of the game, repelling Valley Christian's desperate attempts at an equalizer. Tartan netminder Justin O'Donnell preserved the clean sheet and made five saves on quality attempts by the Defenders.

Head coach Bryan Wallace credited the preparation engineered by coaches Rich Blogg, Willy Miyamoto and Jack Monach as well as the team's perseverance in contributing to the Tartan win.

"Persistence and being consistent paid off as last night we remained committed to our attacking and defending principles and in the end achieved the result I felt we deserved," said Wallace.

The Tartans will travel to take on Quartz Hill High School in the quarterfinal round on Friday, Feb. 18. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
