‘Hour of Code’ Celebrates Computer Science at St. Margaret’s With Fun Activities

Hour of Code is a global movement to spotlight computer science and demystify the skill of coding through introductory activities.
Through class time, lunchtime activities and do-it-yourself tutorials, St. Margaret’s this week celebrated the annual Hour of Code—a global movement to spotlight computer science and demystify the skill of coding through introductory activities.

Students in grades K-5 celebrated Hour of Code by choosing from a wide variety of coding challenges during their weekly iLab class. Students had opportunities to code their own mini games, solve mazes with coding and design art.

In the Library, Middle School students took part in a variety of coding activities, including an activity with computer science teacher Nathan Valdez where students wrote code for a simple “Reflex” game during their lunch.

Students could also do self-guided tutorials selected by teachers to learn how to code a variety of programs, from a mobile drawing app, a program combining art, poetry and computer science, an interactive PSA, a basketball game, and even a program that codes movement of characters for a “dance party.” In all, the tutorials introduced coding through programming languages like Python, CSS and JavaScript.

There was also an “unplugged” activity where students could learn more about the computer language of Binary by creating a Binary bracelet with the letters in their name.

Hour of Code Is a worldwide effort designed to show that anybody can learn the fundamentals of—and broaden participation in—the field computer science.
