Grade 6 Students Write Health and Well-Being eBooks, Lead Read-Aloud With Younger Tartans

Middle School students in the grade 6 health and well-being class wrote and illustrated an ebook on a subject they learned about in class.
Middle School students in the grade 6 health and well-being class completed their final projects before the holiday break, writing and illustrating an ebook on a subject they learned about in class—and then sharing their work with students in the Lower School.

“The books are on a variety of different topics, including empathy, kindness, staying safe online, making healthy choices and managing stress,” said Darla Magana, who teaches the grade 6 health and well-being class along with Father Earl Gibson and Leslie Pacheco-Manning. “A few of the students even focused their stories on personal experiences.”

Using multiple apps, including Book Creator and Pixton, the students wrote their stories and created illustrations to complement the text. The books were at least 10 pages, and pictures were on most of the pages.

Once the books were done, the grade 6 students met with grade 4 students on Chalmers Field to read their books aloud and discuss the subject of the story with their younger peers. Some even had related activities ready, including a breathing exercise the grade 6 students led after reading an ebook about mindfulness.

Health and well-being is a reimagined grade 6 semester-long enrichment course created by St. Margaret’s professional community through an innovation summer grant. The class is divided into three specific paths of study—spiritual health, personal health and digital health.
