Grade 4 Students Create ‘Santa’s Scottie Village’ Experience for Padres Unidos Families

Students collected items donated by Lower School families and set up a shopping experience in the Fountain Courtyard.
Shopping tables neatly organized across the St. Margaret’s Fountain Courtyard proffered clothing, toys, books and more gifts for Orange County families, a holiday shopping experience organized by grade 4 students as a service-learning project.

“Santa’s Scottie Village” is a holiday season tradition at St. Margaret’s for six years now, a collaboration between the Lower School, St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and Padres Unidos to support local families during the holidays.

The families participate in a weekly preschool and parent education program at the Church through Padres Unidos, a non-profit group of community workers who serve low-income families in Orange Country through a variety of child, youth and family services.

Grade 4 students led a donation drive in the Lower School after surveying the needs of the Padres Unidos families. Gifts like pajamas, toys, books and clothing were donated by the Lower School community, and grade 4 then collected all the items, organized them by age and sizing, and then set up a shopping experience in the Fountain Courtyard.

In addition to the gifts, grade 4 students also decorated shopping bags and made Christmas cards to go to each participating family.

“This has become a service-learning tradition that grade 4 and the entire Lower School looks forward to,” said Lower School Director of Community Life Tupper Spring said. “It is a wonderful opportunity to support our neighbors and create a special experience that helps build stronger community partnerships.”
