St. Margaret’s Parents Learn Art of Creating Wreaths at PTF Workshop

It was the second in a series of seasonal workshops planned for this school year in conjunction with the Parent Up Speaker Series.
On a bright and sunny December morning, St. Margaret’s parents gathered at The Ecology Center for a wreath assembly workshop led by the PTF.

It was the second in a series of seasonal workshops planned for this school year in conjunction with the Parent Up Speaker Series and its focus on mental health and well-being.

After enjoying some coffee and pastries, participants learned about the importance of cover crops during a tour of the grounds lead by Amanda Mahaffey of The Ecology Center. Amanda explained that while the 28-acre regenerative farm may look less bountiful this time of year, lots of important work is happening to create strong harvests in the spring. Cover crops are planted not for harvest, but rather to improve the quality of the soil. When the resident chickens come and eat the cover crops, the nutrients in the soil are further enhanced.

Afterwards, resident florist Carra Duggan demonstrated how to create a festive wreath using both fresh materials such as pines, eucalyptus, olive branches, and protea flowers, as well how to create an everlasting wreath using dried flowers. It was fun to see the creative of the St. Margaret’s parents as they selected materials and created their own unique wreaths. Once again the parents enjoyed gathering, spending time in nature and strengthening their mental health and well-being.

St. Margaret’s has a longtime partnership with The Ecology Center, which has included service learning projectsfield trips and other initiatives.

The next Parent Up Speaker Series is scheduled for January 28 featuring Dr. Wendy Suzuki, while the PTF’s next workshop at the Ecology Center is planned for early February. Stay tuned for more details.
