Tartan Cross Country Near-Perfect at League Finals

St. Margaret's finished at the top of the charts on Thursday afternoon.
The Tartan cross country team closed out the regular season by sweeping the Academy League Finals on Thursday at Mason Park in Irvine.

Junior Liesel Blau went wire-to-wire for the win and led the girls team to a perfect score of 15. St. Margaret's finished 1-5 with Amelia Kang, Sarah Bendzick, Coco Johnson, and Ali Botuchis rounding out the scoring and capturing first-team all-league honors. For Blau, the win marks her second league championship, and she was named the Academy League Runner of the Year. Blau also remains undefeated in league competition throughout her entire career at St. Margaret's.

The boys race was a bit closer as the Tartans were absent their usual number two runner, Kevin Shen. Everett Capelle led from the start, posting a 24-second win over teammate Aiden Momtaz. The duo led the Tartans to a 30-37 win over second-place Sage Hill. Capelle was named the Academy League Athlete of the Year for his efforts this fall.

"I'm always so impressed with how poised and competitive our students are in championships," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "We had to overcome some adversity this week with injury and illness, but they always find a way to deliver when it matters. Their care for each other and the program was undeniable today, and I'm very proud of the character they displayed."

Next up for the Tartans is the CIF Prelims on November 12 at Mt. SAC in Walnut. The team will be looking to make their sixth consecutive trip to the CIF Finals and qualify for the State Championships for the fifth straight time.
