St. Margaret's Cross Country Programs Continue to Dominate

The Tartans had a commanding showing at the second Western Athletic Conference cluster meet.
The Tartans swept the second round of league races on Tuesday, Oct. 19 and are now in control of securing their 12th league title on the boys side and 15th on the girls.

For the second league meet in a row, the Tartans went 1-2-3 in both varsity races and controlled the action from the start. The trio of Aiden Momtaz (17:13), Everett Capelle (17:15), and Kevin Shen (17:15.8) broke from the field early and steadily increased the gap to 4th place over the 3-mile course at Oak Canyon Park. The boys team put all six runners in the top 10 as Kevin Chou (5th), Keegan Carnell (8th) and Jared Botuchis (10th) rounded out their team score of 19 to beat second-place Sage Hill by 35 points.

On the girls side, the depth of talent was on full display as the Tartans placed one through seven, posted a perfect score of 15 and opened a 48 point margin of victory over second-place Sage Hill. Liesel Blau remained undefeated in league action with a winning time of 19:55 and was followed closely by teammates Amelia Kang (20:14), Sarah Bendzick (20:46) and Coco Johnson (21:25).

"Our goal was to control our destiny heading into league finals but also leave something in the tank for the Mt. SAC Invitational later in the week," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "It takes poise and confidence to race with controlled efforts, but this group showed they can execute these complex strategies at an impressive level."

Next up for the Tartans is the famed Mt. SAC Invitational on Friday, Oct. 22, at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. The team will race on the same course as the CIF Finals in November and will use the event to strategically prepare for a run at another championship in November.
