PHOTOS: Kindergarten and Grade 1 Science Students Get a Closer Look at the Insects They Are Studying

St. Margaret's kindergarten and grade 1 science classes used the tools in the Lower School Science Lab to further explore their study of insects.
St. Margaret’s kindergarten and grade 1 science classes are held almost exclusively outside in the Lower School Outdoor Classroom, a way to incorporate experiential, nature-based learning to the academic curriculum.

This week, though, an opportunity to build on the outdoor science lessons took the students into the Lower School Science Lab for an up-close look at their most recent subject.

The K-1 science classes, taught by Erin Moore, have been learning about insects, the basics of their anatomy and their various roles in the natural world.

The students furthered their learning in the Lower School Science Lab, typically the home of science classes for students in grades 2-5. There, Mrs. Moore led a demonstration of the digital microscopes, which were connected to a video monitor. She put various insects underneath the microscopes and led a rich discussion with students as they observed what the microscopes revealed and why those otherwise imperceptible features of insects are so important to their livelihood.

Mrs. Moore also brought honeycomb for students to see under a microscope. At the end of the class, students were allowed to further explore the many tools and specimens in the Lower School Science Lab, which many of the students were visiting for the first time.

The unit on insects will continue with Mrs. Moore bringing various STEAM elements into the young Tartans’ exploration of the natural world.

“Next week we will go on a bug hunt in the Outdoor Classroom garden, and we will also work on creating an insect out of different craft materials,” Mrs. Moore said.
