St. Margaret’s science teacher Eric Harrington was awarded the 2021 William Dahlgren Teacher of Excellence Award, presented by the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE), for his work teaching science and entrepreneurship in the Middle School.

The award recognizes outstanding K-12 teachers for “inspiring students in math, science and engineering fields, particularly classes directed toward learning the fields of plastics and general entrepreneurship activities.”

Mr. Harrington was nominated by St. Margaret’s science department chair Edmund Herlihy, citing Mr. Harrington’s acclaimed “Tartan Tank” program which introduces and inspires Middle School students in the world of business, innovation and entrepreneurship through the creation and pitching of a product that fulfills a community need.

“Commitment to his student’s growth and their ability to solve real-world problems are hallmarks to Eric’s teaching philosophy,” Mr. Herlihy wrote in his nomination. “His dedication and passion for science education has been a tremendous asset to the St. Margaret’s community.”

Mr. Harrington was surprised with the presentation of the award at Middle School Chapel this week. The grade 8 students in attendance gave a rousing ovation upon hearing the news.

SAMPE is a global professional member society that provides information on new materials and processing technology, providing a unique and valuable forum for scientists, engineers and academicians.
