Tartans Conduct College-Level Scientific Research as Part of Partnership With UC Irvine

Fourteen Upper School students took part in a valuable internship in a college research environment this summer through a longstanding partnership with UC Irvine.
Working with top academic minds in chemistry, computer science, mechanical and aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering and more, 14 St. Margaret’s Upper School students took part in a valuable internship in a college research environment this summer, through a longstanding partnership between St. Margaret’s and the University of California, Irvine.

Students presented their work and reflected on their experience at a showcase inside Hurlbut Theater on Wednesday.

The partnership between St. Margaret’s and the UCI Samueli School of Engineering is now in its 17th year. Coordinated by St. Margaret’s science teacher Jennifer Ross-Viola, Upper School engineering and science students are matched with UCI faculty members in a research area that aligns with their interest. Students spent eight weeks on their project this summer, either on UCI’s campus or remotely.

“These 14 students gained an understanding of college-level research under top academic minds,” Dr. Ross-Viola said. “We are so grateful for this opportunity, and we’ve seen over the 17 years of this partnership just how immensely valuable the experience is to St. Margaret’s students.”
