St. Margaret’s Closes Memorable 2020-2021 School Year With All-School Closing Ceremony

The ceremony took place in Hurlbut Theater, with the Class of 2021 attending in person and the rest of the school community watching remotely.
St. Margaret’s joyously bid farewell to the 2020-2021 school year, celebrating achievements and accomplishments, and acknowledging milestones attained by both students and the professional community this year.

The Closing Ceremony took place in Hurlbut Theater, with the Class of 2021 attending in person and the rest of the school community watching remotely. It led to Head of School Will Moseley, for the first time in front of a live audience this school year, to exclaim “I see you and I am glad to be with you!” to roaring approval by the senior class.

“Wow, what a year it has been,” Mr. Moseley said. “Tartans, you have done an amazing job. I am so proud of all you have accomplished. I admire your resilience, patience and faith in moving forward despite the many changes, challenges and uncertainties you’ve face throughout this year.”

Mr. Moseley gave special recognition to the Class of 2021, which will officially graduate during  Commencement Exercises at St. Margaret’s on Saturday. Also recognized was the Class of 2025 moving to the Upper School and the Class of 2028 moving to the Middle School.

Several important Closing Ceremony traditions continued. Senior Katherine Collier was honored with the David G. Boyle Lifetime Service Award, given to a lifetime Tartan student whose service and dedication to the school best reflects the extraordinary contributions of the late David Boyle, former Associate Head of School, Upper School Principal and Faculty Emeritus who worked at St. Margaret’s from 1980 to 2012.

Mr. Moseley also presented the Susan A. Remsberg Award to Lower School Director of Community Life Tupper Spring. The award, in its second year, is given annually to a member of the St. Margaret’s professional community for outstanding contributions and significant impact on the school community, exemplifying a profound commitment to St. Margaret’s mission and core values in the past year or recent years.

He also introduced Katherine Collier, Logan Wojcik and Sarah Pence of the Class of 2021, who will serve as alumni class agents in the coming years by partnering with the alumni relations office as members of the Tartan Alumni Association to ensure their classmates’ connection to St. Margaret’s remains strong.

The ceremony also honored members of the professional community who are either retiring or celebrating milestone anniversaries at the school. That included Upper School teacher Nancy Linaweaver, who was named Professional Community Emeritus—the highest honor St. Margaret’s bestows on a member of the professional community.

Mrs. Linaweaver, who is retiring after 27 years at St. Margaret’s, received an emeritus certificate as well as the traditional college chair with the St. Margaret’s crest and engraved with her years of service. She was celebrated with a standing ovation inside Hurlbut Theater.

Also honored was Upper School Director of College Counseling Roland Allen, who is retiring after 17 years as St. Margaret’s.

The ceremony also featured prayers by the St. Margaret’s chaplains, a hymn performed by students, a musical rendition of “Happy All the Time” recorded by Early Childhood School students, a film featuring memorable moments from the school year, and a singing of the alma mater by performing arts faculty.
